Bengos is a spaced-repetition and typing platform for rule recall on the essay portion of the bar exam. You type the rule statements for the issues your exam tends to test, over and over, on a schedule that brings each rule back for review at spaced intervals. The goal is that on exam day the rules come out of your hands with less hesitation.
Unsuccessful bar essays tend to be short. Sometimes the writer knew the rule in general terms but could not recall it quickly or type it out with confidence, and time ran out just as they tried to develop their analysis. This affects candidates whose first language may not be English, as well as STEM graduates whose training rarely involved writing long essays. For some, the written portion is the entire exam: attorneys already licensed in another state may qualify for the California Attorneys' Examination, which has no multiple-choice section. Whatever the reason, the answers come out too short or underdeveloped.
Studying more law does not fix a short essay. What fixes it is making rule statements automatic, so that recalling and typing them takes less effort and exam time goes to analysis instead of remembering.

Not every part of the law shows up in the essays. The multiple-choice Multistate Bar Examination tests each subject in full, down to minor exceptions and edge cases. The essays historically keep to a core set of big-picture ideas.
The essays test narrower law but a wider set of skills: reading the fact pattern, spotting the issues, recalling the rules, applying them to the facts, organizing the answer, and typing it all before time runs out.
